Editor’s Statement

I am incredibly proud of our team's work on vol. 4 of humanitas. humanitas is a summation of what makes Saint Anselm College so special; it showcases the interdisciplinary talents of creative and driven students, talents that are fostered by our liberal arts education and deep commitment to the humanities. As I reflect on my four years at the college, my role with this journal for the last three has been by far my most rewarding experience. I am forever grateful to Professors Gary Bouchard and Christian Gregory for entrusting me with this responsibility.

Art Director’s Statement

humanitas celebrates the unique artistic talents of Saint Anselm College students, which I am beyond excited to highlight in this year’s edition of the journal. Across a variety of mediums, each piece offers a fresh, introspective lens through which you may engage, thoughtfully paired with complementary literary works.

In designing the cover of vol. 4, Melody Oakes’ acrylic painting on a wood panel, “The Drear Drew Gloom,” stood out to me for its originality and soft form. The visible wooden base contrasts with the oceanic scene painted upon it, where a distant sailboat glides across the horizon. I selected Theo Burkhardt’s photograph, “Breathe,” for the inside cover to deliberately invert the front cover’s ratio of sky to sea, instead presenting mountains emerging through mist.

It has been an honor to help provide a platform for these artists to share their work.
